Speaker B:That's a.
Speaker B:That's a tough.
Speaker B:I always want to say green tea it with me because I drink a lot of that too.
Speaker B:But yeah, go check them out.
Speaker B:They make really cool energy supplements.
Speaker B:They're powdered.
Speaker B:Much cheaper in the long run than going and getting your monsters and your rock stars and all that.
Speaker B:And they taste really good.
Speaker B:And I like the energy level.
Speaker B:As I get older, I'm more sensitive to the caffeine and guarana and all the.
Speaker B:I'm less sensitive to this in that same way.
Speaker B:So I don't know what that the difference is, to be honest with you, but it works out real great for me.
Speaker B:I'm.
Speaker B:I'm up to like my.
Speaker B:I think I got three tubs now sitting here.
Speaker B:I had to reorder because I ran out of two tubs.
Speaker B:So anyway, it's really good.
Speaker B:I like it.
Speaker B:Go check it out.
Speaker B:W GG and if you go through, you pick out all the stuff you want.
Speaker B:At the end when you check out, you can use code r verdict all one word to get 10% off of your order.
Speaker B:We do get a small commission, so we appreciate that.
Speaker B:It does help out.
Speaker B:The podcast keeps us going.
Speaker B:But yeah, either way, we appreciate you.
Speaker B:And let's get into this week's movie, which is Pirates of the Caribbean, Curse of the Black Pearl.
Speaker B: ,: Speaker B:It was written by Ted Elliott Terry Rossio and Stuart Beatty.
Speaker B:It was directed by Gorber, Gore Verbinski.
Speaker B:It stars Johnny Depp, Jeffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, Kira Knightley, Jack Davenport, Lee Ehrenberg, Mackenzie Crook, Damien o', Hare, Angus Barnett and Jonathan Price.
Speaker B:It is about.
Speaker A:It's quite the list.
Speaker B:I know.
Speaker B:And I could have kept going, too.
Speaker B:That's the crazy part.
Speaker B:It's about an intrepid blacksmith who teams up with an eccentric pirate captain to save his love from an undead pirate crew.
Speaker B:That is the most basic synopsis you can possibly.
Speaker A:Yeah, that doesn't do it any favors.
Speaker B:I mean, it.
Speaker B:It's not wrong.
Speaker B:It's just lazy.
Speaker B:Anyway, we should start writing those things with that.
Speaker B:This was my movie.
Speaker B:And listen, I'll be honest, I just picked two of the movies that I remember going.
Speaker B:This movie kicked some ass at the, at the Blockbuster, at the theater, at the, you know, the.
Speaker B:Whatever the ratings I.
Speaker B:The money making.
Speaker B:Like, it was all the things.
Speaker B:And so I picked two of my favorites because I want to do.
Speaker B:It's been a rough year for my ass this year for some movies.
Speaker B:So I decided I was gonna make it.
Speaker B:So I watched at least two movies, turns out, four movies that I kind of really liked.
Speaker B:And then these two were up there on the list.
Speaker B:So I.
Speaker B:But, yeah, I was like, I'm gonna pick it.
Speaker B:And I. I think universally, at least in my opinion, in my experience, like, these are two very beloved movies.
Speaker B:And so in general.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:I'm sure there's people that hate them, but in general, people love these two movies that I picked and this one a lot.
Speaker B:Even though there's been some controversy over the last few years of its main star, which I'm sure we'll mention at least.
Speaker B:But yeah, so I picked it because I love them.
Speaker B:Like, I have very fond memories of both.
Speaker B:I saw both of them multiple times in the theater, ironically, Casey and I, this was our technically first date, I think was going to see this movie.
Speaker B:She had, like.
Speaker B:She still has somewhat of a girl hard on for Johnny Depp.
Speaker A:Who doesn't.
Speaker B:It's fair and.
Speaker B:Well, I won't go there.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:So I. Yeah, like I said, there's a lot of memory for me with this one and it's.
Speaker B:I just really enjoy it.
Speaker B:I think it's fun, it's funny, it's entertaining.
Speaker B:So, yeah, that's why I picked this one.
Speaker B:What about you, man?
Speaker B:Like, what are your.
Speaker B:What are your thoughts on initial.
Speaker B:On Pirates of the Caribbean?
Speaker A:So this was one of the first, like, PG13 movies I saw.
Speaker B:Oh, oh, I forget how young you are, dude.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:So.
Speaker A:Because it came out when I was 10.
Speaker A:And so this is like one of the first ones, and it was so popular that, like, even the second one, when that one came out, that was like, I. I spent my birthday going to it to see it with Javier.
Speaker B:Gotcha when we were 13.
Speaker B:You babies.
Speaker B:This is.
Speaker A:This is interesting because, like, you have Johnny Depp who puts on such a great performance, and it really changed what a pirate was.
Speaker A:Yeah, right.
Speaker A:Because.
Speaker A:And the only person who did that previously, at least that I think, is like, the guy who played Long John Silver in Disney's Treasure Island.
Speaker B:Mm.
Speaker A:The guy who started the R. And it's because of him.
Speaker A:And then that kind of stereotype of what he was as a pirate.
Speaker A:And I think it was Robert Newton.
Speaker A:I think Robert Newton was.
Speaker A:Was his name probably.
Speaker A:But he.
Speaker A:He, like, that was a pirate for 60 years until Johnny Depp came around and.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:Changed what a pirate was.
Speaker A:And like, just that shock of, whoa, this is different.
Speaker A:Was done so well.
Speaker A:But here's the thing, like, watching it recently, just for here and then in recent years, I think it would have flopped if it was just Johnny Depp doing Johnny Depp things.
Speaker A:And I think it only thrives as well as it does because of Jeffrey Rush playing Barbosa in that mean, menacing way, and then Davenport Norrington.
Speaker A:So you have these very straight lace kind of characters who are still in the stereotype, but they are such a foil that you can have Johnny Depp being Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow.
Speaker A:Crazy out there.
Speaker A:Wild.
Speaker A:And you don't hate it because you still are grounded in somewhat of a reality.
Speaker A:And I was.
Speaker A:Because I was thinking about this, I was like, I like the first three of these movies.
Speaker B:Pretty.
Speaker A:They're pretty good.
Speaker A:A great trilogy when you combine them all together.
Speaker A:Four and five are almost like.
Speaker A:You wipe them off, but you go back and you watch 4 and 5 and they start to turn your kind of straight lace characters into a little bit more goofball.
Speaker A:So I'll pick on the fourth one because you have Jeffrey Rush, who's like a privateer at this point, and he's just, you know, goofing off.
Speaker A:They try to turn him into a second Jack Sparrow.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:And then your bad guy you bring in is Ian McShane is Blackbeard.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:And again, you add a little bit more goofiness to it and it just crashes and burns because now you have too many doing it.
Speaker A:But this one is just perfect.
Speaker A:And I think it's because you have this balance Back and forth of.
Speaker A:You have the almost straight lace period piece characters that really hold it all together.
Speaker A:You believe in the menacing.
Speaker A:You know, Jeffrey Rush and you believe in Davenport is the Commodore Norrington.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:And it works to now let Johnny Depp off his leash and go crazy.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:And it's just.
Speaker A:I think it would have suffered if you didn't have those two.
Speaker A:Maybe not at the time, but I think, like, now or a few years later, you would have had a lot less for differing people and far more critics coming down hard on Johnny Depp's performance in Pirates as being too off the mark, too goofy, doesn't make any sense, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Speaker A:But I don't think you'll ever see that because the first three are just.
Speaker A:There's so good.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:So good when it comes down to it.
Speaker A:But, yeah, I thoroughly enjoy this movie.
Speaker A:So when it made the list, I was all about it.
Speaker B:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker A:It's tried a couple times to get on the list.
Speaker B:It has, it has, it has.
Speaker B:I.
Speaker B:You know, and I agree with you.
Speaker B:I think I Even look at 2 and 3 and I see some flaws.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:Like, I think because it's so reliant on the success of the first one, which was Lightning in a bottle.
Speaker B:Like, if you know anything about the story of the movie, like, they almost didn't let Johnny Depp do his.
Speaker B:Like, because he just.
Speaker B:He just came on set and they were like, what the.
Speaker B:The are you doing?
Speaker B:Like, got the gold teeth in there on purpose and the dreads.
Speaker B:And like, the.
Speaker B:Everybody was like, no, this isn't gonna work.
Speaker B:Disney's like, no, not gonna.
Speaker B:And thankfully Gore Verbinsky's like, no knuckles.
Speaker B:These guys.
Speaker B:This dude's a genius.
Speaker B:Whether he's a dick and he's an.
Speaker B:He can be all of those things and still be a genius.
Speaker B:And Johnny Depp, from an acting only perspective, objectively, is a phenomenal actor.
Speaker B:And it shows in this.
Speaker B:Because if you go back and look at, like, I mean, you got Edward Scissorhands, you got Friday the 13th, you've got Crybaby.
Speaker B:There's so many Johnny Depp movies that you look back and they're all a little quirky and a little weird, but there's nothing like this.
Speaker A:No.
Speaker B:And he's not really.
Speaker B:Not since, like, these weird, strange indie movies.
Speaker B:Like, even, like, Eating Gilbert Grape.
Speaker B:And like, I can't remember the other one where he's the brother and sister and he does the little thing with the rolls and the forks.
Speaker B:I don't know why I can't think of that.
Speaker A:I don't know.
Speaker B:Anyway.
Speaker B:But, yeah, so, like, that one.
Speaker B:He.
Speaker B:He was never, like, a leading man in the traditional sense.
Speaker B:And then they.
Speaker B:And so when they put him in this, everybody was like, wait, what are you doing?
Speaker B:This is Johnny Depp.
Speaker B:And then you're like, dude, there is nothing to me that I don't.
Speaker B:That opening scene when he's coming in on a sinking ship, I was hooked from.
Speaker B:And he just steps off onto the dog, and everybody's like, wait, what the.
Speaker B:Yeah, it doesn't get any better.
Speaker B:Like, I just go, okay, I'm done.
Speaker B:This movie is phenomenal already.
Speaker B:And then it just got better and better and better as it went.
Speaker B:And my only flaw with this movie, ironically enough, is Orlando Bloom.
Speaker B:Like, I can't.
Speaker B:He.
Speaker B:And he's not bad.
Speaker B:He just sticks out.
Speaker A:He's out of place.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:Because everybody else is so good, including Kira Knightley.
Speaker B:You've got the goofy pirate, the two goofball pirates.
Speaker B:Hello, puppet.
Speaker B:Like, those guys are phenomenal at what they do.
Speaker B:And then Orlando Bloom, I'm just like, okay, you.
Speaker B:You were Legolas and you had a face, and people knew your name because of Lord of the Rings at this point.
Speaker B:So we're going to bring you in, give you a leading role, a secondarily leading role, so that we can say you're in this movie.
Speaker B:But I think he wasn't as good as that role could have been.
Speaker B:He was fine.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Well, the problem is he's really hard to root for.
Speaker B:True.
Speaker A:He's.
Speaker A:He's someone you're supposed to root for for at least half the movie.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:And he is really to root for.
Speaker A:And the only time you are rooting for him is when he's standing next to Johnny Depp.
Speaker B:Yep.
Speaker A:And so you're not really rooting for him.
Speaker A:You're rooting for his team.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:And so, like, the.
Speaker A:The problem is he fades away pretty quick because as soon as you bring in Gibbs.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah.
Speaker A:You no longer really need Orlando Bloom.
Speaker A:Except for plot mechanics.
Speaker B:Yep.
Speaker A:That's it.
Speaker A:And so it's.
Speaker A:It's rough because he does a good job.
Speaker A:Like you said, it's not that he did a bad performance, but it's really hard to root for him.
Speaker A:And then even as you add in more movies, he becomes even kind of less important throughout the trilogy or even series as a whole.
Speaker A:And so it's.
Speaker A:It's really.
Speaker A:It really sucks, but it's really hard to root for the guy.
Speaker B:Sure.
Speaker A:And with such a big cast and such a Good cast.
Speaker A:It's easy for him just to fall into the background for a huge portion of this movie.
Speaker B:Yep.
Speaker B:Agreed.
Speaker B:And I. I know we're talking about the first one, but I would even say that the funny part is, is Orlando Bloom is not someone that I am like, yeah, look at.
Speaker B:Or Daniel until he becomes Davy Jones.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:Like, that's when I'm like, look at this bad right now.
Speaker B:But before that, I'm like, you're kind of a whiny little.
Speaker B:Aren't you?
Speaker B:Like, and so it's hard for me to.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:Anyway, you make a good point.
Speaker B:The way to say that it's hard to root for him, even though he's, like, the catalyst for this whole thing.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:And the.
Speaker A:The almost annoying part is that unfortunately, he's taking screen time away from your funny pirates.
Speaker A:Oh, you're corresponding funny.
Speaker A:Two British guys.
Speaker B:Oh, dude.
Speaker A:Who are just, you know.
Speaker A:So every time you got Orlando Bloom going through something, you're taking screen time away from this.
Speaker A:Just.
Speaker A:It's.
Speaker A:It's hard to, like, say that the side cast is so great in this, because they are.
Speaker A:And it's hard to just, like, be like, hey, I want less of, you know, Orlando Bloom as Lego Loss as Orlando Bloom as Will Turner as Orlando Bloom.
Speaker A:And I want more of these side characters that really were probably only slated for.
Speaker A:Hey, we're gonna give you guys a couple scenes.
Speaker A:And then as they're going through, like.
Speaker A:And a couple more and a couple more and a couple more because they did so well.
Speaker A:And then they keep popping up again.
Speaker A:Like, I'm gonna spend a lot of time talking about the series as a whole.
Speaker A:They keep popping up everywhere, and it's almost like, let's just move aside Orlando Bloom because it's really hard to root for.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:And it's.
Speaker A:And it's.
Speaker A:He's got a really hard, I think, position to play because he's not a.
Speaker A:He's not a bad guy.
Speaker A:You know, he's not approached.
Speaker A:He's not an antagonist.
Speaker A:He's not really a protagonist.
Speaker A:He's just a main side character.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:And it's like he got stuck in a.
Speaker A:In a role almost as a.
Speaker A:As unfortunate as his talents.
Speaker A:But, yeah, it's.
Speaker A:He's.
Speaker A:He's one of my least favorite parts of this movie.
Speaker A:And that is not going to be a popular take.
Speaker B:Sure.
Speaker B:I. Yeah, I mean, it's.
Speaker B:It's.
Speaker B:I'm always afraid when I say that shit, because it's like, everybody's like, ooh, but Orlando Balloon.
Speaker B:And I'm like, yeah, but he kind of sucks.
Speaker B:And.
Speaker B:But here's the best part though is no matter what, like, every time I watch it, I'm like, it's Orlando Bloom.
Speaker B:But the movie still just.
Speaker B:And I'll tell you what, the, some of the, like, I don't remember, like when I went and saw it, I was like, whatever.
Speaker B:But I laugh my ass off even to this day watching that movie.
Speaker B:Like some of the one liners and the, the like dialogue in it, like the whole.
Speaker B:It's the on it, like the on it, I'm a pirate, I'm a liar, I'm a dishonest.
Speaker B:And you can always count on me to be dishonest.
Speaker B:Like that whole sequence.
Speaker A:And then we named the monkey chair.
Speaker B:Yeah, but he's.
Speaker B:Or he's like, you are without doubt the worst pirate I've ever heard of.
Speaker B:But you have heard of me.
Speaker A:It's just like, just zinger after zinger after zinger.
Speaker B:It's great.
Speaker B:One of my favorites is like again, the two goober pirates.
Speaker B:When they're sitting in the boat at night and he's like, he goes in and then they come out and then Bob's your uncle or some.
Speaker B:I don't even remember.
Speaker B:But dude, I giggle my ass off at that whole sequence.
Speaker B:The whole time.
Speaker B:It's great.
Speaker B:And then the other two that are with the Commodore, like the other two, like red coat guys.
Speaker B:Those, the pair that are.
Speaker B:Oh, dude, there's just so much comedic genius in the midst of this semi serious.
Speaker A:Yeah, it's like your third act final thing.
Speaker A:And it's, it's weird because this movie jumps around a lot between kind of serious, we'll call them, like epic moments.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:And total goofball.
Speaker A:And so the one that comes to mind, like you're talking about is you have this sequence talking about like, you know, oh, yeah, go ahead, kill him.
Speaker A:But you don't want to do it yet type of a thing.
Speaker A:Right?
Speaker A:This whole back and forth and then it, the next transition is just the epic walking underwater scene with the skeleton pirates.
Speaker A:And that whole transition.
Speaker A:Super cool.
Speaker A:And then you cut again and it's like the two Goobers and the British army and they're like, you don't think he was telling the truth, do you?
Speaker A:Just, just have this conversation back and forth and it's, it all ties back to like their first interaction with Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow.
Speaker A:It's like, you know, wait a minute, hold on.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:You don't think he was telling the truth, do you?
Speaker A:And it's just so well done because it's this cut back and forth, and typically I would hate that.
Speaker A:And it would pull me out and I'd be on here talking about, like, just play through one idea at a time or whatever.
Speaker A:But they do it so well that it doesn't feel jarring.
Speaker A:And normally that would pull me out because it.
Speaker A:It does jump back and forth and back and forth to these almost very serious kind of moments and then flipping right back to goofy fuzzball jokes.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:And it just.
Speaker A:It shouldn't work as well as it does, but it does.
Speaker A:And it's like everybody gets their line right.
Speaker A:Everybody gets their time in the sun.
Speaker A:Oddly enough, the only person doesn't is really Orlando Bloom.
Speaker B:That's true.
Speaker B:Very true.
Speaker A:And they try and give him a couple ones, but it's just.
Speaker A:They don't land very well.
Speaker B:I think the only one he gets is at the very end when Depp throws him the.
Speaker B:The coin and he drops it.
Speaker B:That's the only.
Speaker B:But, like, he's been trying so goddamn hard to get one until you get to that point that you're like, was that worth the payoff?
Speaker B:Was that.
Speaker B:Was that juice worth the squeeze right there?
Speaker B:Because, I mean, it was Cool moment, don't get me wrong.
Speaker B:But.
Speaker B:Yeah, but he's just like.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:Keying it up like that versus, like, the.
Speaker A:The one that happened just a little bit earlier between the two pirates where it's like, you know, they're in the dresses, Right.
Speaker A:This is what the Greeks done at Troy, except I was in a horse instead of dresses.
Speaker A:Like, such a stupid line, but I cackle and giggle.
Speaker A:And then you're tea and everything else up, and it just doesn't hit the same.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:Oh, yeah.
Speaker B:It's so weird.
Speaker A:It's.
Speaker A:It's so weird.
Speaker A:But you had a great take at the beginning where it's lightning in a bottle.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:Like, good luck trying to recreate this in any way, shape or form.
Speaker A:It's not gonna happen.
Speaker B:No.
Speaker A:And it's just.
Speaker A:But somehow it did.
Speaker A:And in honor of Matson, who's not here, I think we gotta talk about the music.
Speaker A:Oh, does the score.
Speaker A:The music add so much to it?
Speaker A:Like, you know, you mentioned at the beginning the boat just sinking boat.
Speaker A:Ship coming in type of thing.
Speaker A:And behind it, it's.
Speaker A:It's the worst kind of visual you could imagine for.
Speaker A:For a movie about, you know, the sea and ships and everything like that.
Speaker B:Oh, yeah.
Speaker A:But it has the music for it.
Speaker A:Oh, and yes.
Speaker B:This big, epic, sweeping score coming in.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:It's so good.
Speaker A:And they time it perfectly.
Speaker A:So he steps off on the dock to the beat.
Speaker A:It's just so well done.
Speaker A:And.
Speaker A:And it was Howard Shore, wasn't it?
Speaker B:Klaus Bal.
Speaker A:Klaus B.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker B:Yep.
Speaker B:Who's us.
Speaker B:He came off of.
Speaker B:So he was so.
Speaker B:I knew this because I used to be a music major and there were like, Hans Zimmer is one of.
Speaker B:Ironically.
Speaker B:We'll talk about him later in our next episode.
Speaker B:But Hans Zimmer is one of my favorite movie composers of all time.
Speaker B:And Klaus Bal was always one of his producers.
Speaker B:And then this was like his.
Speaker B:His, like step out and do his own composing thing.
Speaker B:So anyway, sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt.
Speaker B:You thought there.
Speaker B:But Klaus Bedo is killed it.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:And just every single chance you have music so good and it adds to wherever you put it in.
Speaker A:Like the one that is.
Speaker A:I don't remember if it's a.
Speaker A:Like a remix of it or changing up, but when you have the kind of boat chasing.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:The shimching, like, and you get that eerie kind of music coming along, but it's still got enough beat to it.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:And it's got a, you know, kind of a upbeat, happy feel to it while still being menacing.
Speaker A:And then, you know, you get the great visual of the fog following the Black Pearl.
Speaker B:Oh, yeah.
Speaker A:It's just so cool.
Speaker B:Like, so good.
Speaker A:The music hits every single time in this.
Speaker A:Every single scene is just such a great job.
Speaker A:And so that once again adds to this lightning of the bottle effect because it doesn't miss once.
Speaker B:Oh, no, no.
Speaker B:It's so good.
Speaker B:I had.
Speaker B:I used to.
Speaker B:I mean, I still have it in a playlist, but I like, I go to sleep a lot of times to classical music or things like that.
Speaker B:And this movie, Gladiator, I have a lot from some video games too, that I do, but this was one of my go to's for sure.
Speaker B:Just that it's just so good.
Speaker B:Dude, you can't.
Speaker B:And then like you said the very beginning, like, it's all this big, epic sweeping thing.
Speaker B:You're like, look at this pirate standing up on the cat's eye, bird's eye thing.
Speaker B:And then he's like.
Speaker B:And then you're like, wait, the boat's sinking.
Speaker A:And then the next thing.
Speaker A:Nope, it Sun.
Speaker B:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker A:And then.
Speaker B:And then every time that comes on during those fight scenes and like the action you're just like, gets you going.
Speaker B:So.
Speaker B:Yeah, you're.
Speaker B:You're not wrong.
Speaker B:There were so many elements of the movie that added to the Value and the entertainment level, because you can't help but like when that starts playing, you're like, let's go.
Speaker B:Or like, to your credit, like when there's a chase scene or there's an eerie creepy.
Speaker B:Like in the.
Speaker B:The one where the.
Speaker B:My favorite, I think is when.
Speaker B:When you're talking about the skeletons, like the pirates underwater, when they're like, gents, take a walk.
Speaker B:And then it's like that music that's playing when they're walking all slow through.
Speaker B:I'm like, I don't want to be in the cave when these guys are.
Speaker B:The boat.
Speaker B:When these guys get there, like, no, that's not gonna be good.
Speaker A:That is the last place I ever wanted.
Speaker B:And then I love that they get on the boat and in the midst of all this fucking murder and mayhem from these skeleton pirates, they just.
Speaker B:It shouldn't work, like you said.
Speaker B:But the comedy part, like, is great right up to the point where the curse is broken and they're all like, still think they're invincible.
Speaker B:And the one dude gets stabbed or shot or whatever it is and falls over and they're all like parlay.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Oh, God.
Speaker A:Or even through like that, you know, fight scene.
Speaker A:Which again should be traumatizing.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:Ways you, you have the humor of Jonathan Price just wailing on somebody.
Speaker A:And so they're cutting back and forth and you're getting live updates of him just beating on.
Speaker B:That's great.
Speaker A:It's just like, it's.
Speaker A:It's one of those things that once again shouldn't really work, but they throw it in and it works and it works well.
Speaker B:It's amazing.
Speaker A:Hello.
Speaker B:And then when he's.
Speaker B:Oh, like, he's all.
Speaker B:It's great.
Speaker B:I love it.
Speaker A:It's such a good pick.
Speaker A:Such a good.
Speaker B:Yeah, it's so good.
Speaker B:And like you said, there's just so many characters and actors that, that.
Speaker B:And I love that this is one of those things where you don't have.
Speaker B:And at the time, it wasn't a star studded cast at all.
Speaker B:Like Orlando Bloom next to Johnny Depp was the biggest Keira Knightley.
Speaker B:Nobody even knew who the she was at this point.
Speaker B:She was like 18 years old.
Speaker B:Like, I mean, what a find.
Speaker B:Don't get me wrong.
Speaker B:And we all knew.
Speaker B:I mean, obviously Jeffrey Rush, everybody knows.
Speaker B:But he's never been like this.
Speaker A:This was big in American cinema until this.
Speaker A:Yeah, he was big in Australia or big on the theater.
Speaker A:He hadn't really broken out in very many movies.
Speaker B:No, he had a couple little bit parts that you can go back and watch.
Speaker B:But this was like he went through the roof after this.
Speaker B:And rightly so.
Speaker B:Like, the guy's a genius.
Speaker B:And so there was just so many little pieces that nobody was like, oh, we gotta go see this movie.
Speaker B:Except for Johnny Depp kind of making another comeback at this point.
Speaker B:And Jeffrey or Orlando Bloom, who's fresh off of a.
Speaker B:Again, another ensemble set of films that he was probably not.
Speaker B:He had moments in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but his popularity is because he's a very good looking man.
Speaker B:Like, he's gorgeous.
Speaker A:Let's just.
Speaker B:Especially back then, he's kind of gone to hell a little bit now with all the he's got going on his life.
Speaker B:But back then, God damn.
Speaker B:But it's just like.
Speaker B:Anyway, I just love how it came together with like a bunch of little misfits and not so well knowns and a couple people here that everybody knew who they were.
Speaker B:But to carry a franchise, I think that's another thing that Hollywood gets wrong in a lot of cases.
Speaker B:And we, we've done and we talk a lot about these huge ensemble casts.
Speaker B:Sometimes they work really well.
Speaker B:Sometimes I think they're counterproductive because there's so much talent that you're like in full overload of what you're doing.
Speaker B:So it's this fine balance.
Speaker B:But this is one where it's like, let's take a bunch of really talented people that people don't know how talented they really are.
Speaker B:We get the cat, the main names, couple names to get people in and then watch it work.
Speaker B:And did it work?
Speaker B:So good, so good.
Speaker B:Should we rate it?
Speaker A:Let's do it.
Speaker A:All right.
Speaker B:Mine first.
Speaker B:I am so torn on this one.
Speaker B:I'm not though.
Speaker B:I'm gonna give it a five.
Speaker B:I think it's.
Speaker B:I think it's super good.
Speaker B:And part of me is, is there's comparative to it.
Speaker B:Because like you said, even two and three are great, but they're not one.
Speaker B:One was just so surprisingly perfect that I'm like.
Speaker B:And it's so rewatchable and it's funny and it always makes you feel entertained and like gives me energy and it's, I just love it.
Speaker B:So it's, it's a five for me.
Speaker B:I'd watch it anytime.
Speaker B:I think Johnny Depp kills it in the most surprisingly non Johnny Depp and complete Johnny Depp way that you can possibly do.
Speaker B:And then the coming together of all of these bit pieces that you just don't expect just works so well.
Speaker B:So really, really just love this movie and was really happy to watch it.
Speaker B:It's been a while since I've watched it, so it was really fun.
Speaker B:So five for me.
Speaker A:I'm gonna be right there with you.
Speaker A:It's a five.
Speaker A:There's.
Speaker A:There's not enough to dock it for any reason because we've been talking about the lightning in the bottle effect.
Speaker A:And even though we talked about 2, 3, and occasionally 4 and 5, those don't get made without one.
Speaker B:Sure.
Speaker A:And being as good as it was, like there was no real plan to make sequels for it until this really popped off.
Speaker A:And then it's like, oh, hey, we.
Speaker A:We got something here.
Speaker A:Like we can add to this.
Speaker A:We can build on it.
Speaker A:And so even it's though it's a bit jarring.
Speaker A:Like they find a way to bring everything back together for a really good trilogy.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:So yeah, it's gonna be fine for me.
Speaker A:I will watch it anytime, anywhere.
Speaker A:There's.
Speaker A:I'm never gonna say no to this movie.
Speaker A:So.
Speaker A:Yeah, it's a.
Speaker A:It's a perfect movie for me.
Speaker B:I probably watched it way too much early on.
Speaker B:Like we used to watch it all the time.
Speaker B:I probably saw in the theater at least three times.
Speaker B:It was that good.
Speaker B:So anyway, yeah, I mean, true blockbuster too.
Speaker B:Like crushed it at the box office.
Speaker B:So yeah, there it is.
Speaker B:What a fun week.
Speaker B:Three for Blockbuster month.
Speaker B:Alec, tell everybody where they can find us when we're not trying to join up with the crew of the back Black Pearl.
Speaker A:Dude, being a pirate would be so cool.
Speaker B:Especially an undead pirate.
Speaker B:Except for the whole thirsty hungry thing.
Speaker A:Yeah, that.
Speaker A:That really put a damper on it, but I guess.
Speaker B:But the rest of the show would be pretty dope.
Speaker A:You don't want people wanting to be an undead pirate, I suppose.
