Heavy Metal (1981)
This podcast episode delves into the complexities surrounding the animated film "Heavy Metal," originally released on August 7, 1981. We explore its narrative structure, which comprises a series of disjointed vignettes that weave together an overarching theme of a malevolent green orb embodying ultimate evil. Our discussion examines the film's artistic merit alongside its controversial elements, including its gratuitous nudity and depictions of violence, which starkly contrast with contemporary sensibilities. Both hosts express their disbelief at the film's enduring cult status, questioning the cultural implications of such content in the context of its time. Ultimately, our critique reflects a deeper investigation into the film's legacy and its influence on subsequent animated narratives, revealing a multifaceted perspective on what constitutes cinematic art.

Speaker A:So back to our regular scheduled program programming we are doing this week, Heavy Metal.
Speaker A: ,: Speaker A:It was written by Daniel Goldberg, Len Blum and Dan o'.
Speaker A:Bannon.
Speaker A:It's directed by John Bruno, John Halas and Julian Harris.
Speaker A:It stars.
Speaker A:And here's where gets a little wild when you start thinking about it.
Speaker A:Richard Romanus, John Candy, Dawn Franks, Joe Flaherty, Carolyn Semple, Eugene Levy, August Shellenberg, Jackie Burroughs.
Speaker A:I could keep going.
Speaker A:Like it's wild and it's about a glowing green orb that embodies ultimate evil.
Speaker A:It terrorizes a young girl with an anthology of bizarre and fantastic stories.
Speaker A:That's.
Speaker A:I wish I could say it wasn't as accurate as it is.
Speaker B:It's pretty accurate.
Speaker A:But that's about this movie.
Speaker A:This was a me pick and this was 100% because I knew Charles would pick it, which gave it a good chance of being a pick.
Speaker A:And I knew that Alec would be like, what in the actual.
Speaker A:Am I watching?
Speaker A:So I think I was successful.
Speaker B:Yes.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:This.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:100 Was to with Alec because I had what look this movie was.
Speaker A:Came out the year I was born.
Speaker A:I was like four months old when this movie came out.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker A:But I remember seeing it as a child.
Speaker A:And yes, I saw this as a child because my horny little cousins.
Speaker A:I say little, they were my older cousins when I was being babysat, would like watch it because it's got boobs in it even though they're animated and cartoonish and weird.
Speaker A:But that's, you know, teenagers back when.
Speaker B:You're horny, you're horny.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:You know, those, those types of things were not as easily accessible back in the early 80s as they are today.
Speaker A:So you took any kind of nipple you could see as a young man.
Speaker A:Young straight man, obviously.
Speaker A:And so I remember watching this and not knowing at all what was going on, except I was like 8 or 9 and they were boobs.
Speaker A:So I, you know, it was what it was, but it's.
Speaker A:It was weird.
Speaker A:And I, you know, I want to talk a little bit more about it, but I'm going to leave it at that.
Speaker A:So literally, I chose this just because it was a weird ass even when I was a kid.
Speaker A:And now I think, oddly enough, it's probably less weird today from certain standpoint, but it's still a weird movie.
Speaker A:So I had to pick it.
Speaker A:I'm very curious.
Speaker A:I know that you hadn't seen this.
Speaker B:No.
Speaker B:Why on earth would I have seen this before?
Speaker A:Had you ever even heard of this before?
Speaker B:No, my wife had.
Speaker B:Really?
Speaker A:Okay, that when I see I like.
Speaker B:OC When I said, oh, I gotta watch Heavy Metal, she's like, oh, I've seen that.
Speaker B:It's weird.
Speaker B:Didn't do it justice.
Speaker A:It is really fucking weird, this understatement.
Speaker B:Yeah, I saw it when I was 32, six days ago for the first time and I didn't understand the story any better than your 8 year old self did.
Speaker A:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker B:It does not make sense.
Speaker B:There were parts of it that were interesting or cool.
Speaker A:Sure.
Speaker B:But I need.
Speaker B:I need some sort of story.
Speaker B:And this felt like they decided to wrap up the story or have their through line right around Mini story six.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah, yeah.
Speaker A:Wild.
Speaker B:Because, I mean, I, I would have preferred the entire movie to take place in like the Cabbie Driver, you know, this dystopian future, New York.
Speaker B:That would have been cool.
Speaker B:Or you could do like the galactic space monster one.
Speaker B:That would have been cool.
Speaker A:Mm.
Speaker B:But the other little mini stories.
Speaker A:Is going on.
Speaker B:Like the dude who goes like, what is it?
Speaker B:Is it John Carter?
Speaker A:Oh, yeah, yeah.
Speaker A:The weird kid.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:Who gets sent to the moon that.
Speaker A:Has like superpowers and when he gets there and like.
Speaker A:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker A:Sleeps with the evil, tried to sleep with the sacrificial lamb, then sleeps with the evil queen.
Speaker A:And yeah,.
Speaker B:It then just boiled out of control from there.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:But there was a couple of these mini stories.
Speaker B:I was like, hey, you could have, you could have like something decently cool if you just stuck there.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:But no, he went on some wild acid trip up a movie with literally.
Speaker A:A bunch like a couple of drug addict alien abductors.
Speaker A:Like I. Yeah, the.
Speaker A:Those guy.
Speaker A:The crash at the end.
Speaker A:Like, that story literally had no point whatsoever.
Speaker B:No, it didn't.
Speaker A:The sexual John Candy robot.
Speaker A:That.
Speaker A:Yeah, so weird.
Speaker A:Jeez.
Speaker B:I was, I was watching most of it going, huh?
Speaker A:Yeah, yeah, this movie.
Speaker A:This movie.
Speaker A:And it couldn't be made today.
Speaker A:Like, so here's if you watched Love, Death and Robots at all.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:Okay, so I laugh my ass off because a few years ago there's four seasons of it now.
Speaker A:Netflix did a TV show called Love, Death and Robots.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker A:I highly recommend it, to be honest with you.
Speaker A:Like, I think you'd like it, but it's, it's the same format only without the through line.
Speaker A:Like, there's no, there's no overarching story to this.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:Like, when you watch Love and Death and Robots, it's just little cinematics, like animated and different types of animation.
Speaker A:So you might get some cgi, you might get some art, hand drawn art, might get a combination of the two.
Speaker A:You even get some weird abstract.
Speaker A:That's like, what the.
Speaker A:But like, it's, it's little vignettes Little animated vignettes, some with really great stories, some you're like, what the am I watching?
Speaker A:But it's this, it's.
Speaker A:It's 19, it's heavy metal.
Speaker A:1981 Converted into a modern format.
Speaker A:They did it better because they don't try to connect everything.
Speaker A:Like they just tell these stories.
Speaker A:So I highly recommend it.
Speaker A:But I laughed because as I was watching this, I was like, God, this feel.
Speaker A:And I was like a.
Speaker A:Because I haven't watched, there's a whole new season of Love, Death and Robots that I haven't watched yet.
Speaker A:And I need to.
Speaker A:But I was like, this is love.
Speaker A:This is the, this is what inspired Love, Death and Robots.
Speaker A:Because the other thing that I thought was ironic that the, the parallel with.
Speaker A:Between the two is the voice actors.
Speaker A:The actors that voice in.
Speaker A:You got John Candy, you got Eugene Levy, who at the time John Candy was massive.
Speaker A:Eugene Levy was not so much massive, but there were a lot of the actors and voices in this film are like at in the 80s, pretty big actors.
Speaker A:I mean you don't have any bombshells or anything like massive A listers but you have very well known names.
Speaker A:And the same with Love, Death and Robots.
Speaker A:You have some very big A list actors that do voices in that.
Speaker A:So I was like, this is hilarious.
Speaker A:That it was.
Speaker A:And it's like, loved it.
Speaker A:It's violent.
Speaker A:There's like, it's not for kids animation.
Speaker A:Like.
Speaker A: ed because of the parallel of: Speaker A:Now I say that with the caveat that this version Heavy metal is so riddled with racism, sexism, sexual assault, Violet, like unnecessarily unnecessary violence.
Speaker A:Like it is wild the that goes on in this movie.
Speaker A:That.
Speaker A:And I'm not one, you know me, like I understand and people can feel how they want to feel, but I'm not easily offended.
Speaker A:Like, I'm very hard to offend.
Speaker A: I also look at the context of: Speaker A:So people didn't get offended by the same things that they do now.
Speaker A:And there wasn't as serious repercussions about things that they probably should have gotten offended more back then.
Speaker A:But like, as violent and as wild as love, death and robots can be, it doesn't even come close to like the offensive nature of what this one does.
Speaker A:And the gratuitous nudity in this as an animated film like is hilarious and terrible all at the same time.
Speaker A:But yeah, dude, it's wild the good.
Speaker A:And I.
Speaker A:But I, I couldn't.
Speaker A:That's All I could think about when I was watching this again is they, somebody was inspired by this piece of.
Speaker A:And made a whole four season show on Netflix that has been relatively successful.
Speaker A:So it's like, Jesus, this just proves.
Speaker B:There's no bad ideas, just bad timing.
Speaker A:I'm telling you.
Speaker A:I'm telling you.
Speaker A:Telling you it's.
Speaker A:It's a weird.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:When, when we, when an animated topics came out, this is the first thing that I thought of.
Speaker A:I was like, why I have to pick heavy metal?
Speaker A:Because it's one of those things that like, for some reason it pops up on feeds or like I'll search for something and you know, like the little ads or whatever that'll pop up for like I get an IMDb so much because of the podcast and whatnot that I always get Constant ads for IMDb.
Speaker A:Well, every once in every blue moon this movie will be on the little scroll for IMDb.
Speaker A:And I just really.
Speaker A:And all I do is laugh.
Speaker A:Like I giggle and go, heavy metal.
Speaker A:What a weird ass goddamn show.
Speaker A:And it's just like, so.
Speaker A:Yeah, but there was the first thing I thought, I was like, we have to get this on the list and hopefully watch it so I can.
Speaker B:With Alec.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:God damn it.
Speaker B:But see, so the problem is the movie is so bad.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:And so weird that, you know, I start picking at little threads and so, right.
Speaker B:We have, you know, the heavy metal.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:The root of all evil kind of influencing everything.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:And you have semblance of a throughput.
Speaker B:But then I was going through, I was like, there's, there's no consistency in this on what it does or how it responds or anything of that nature.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Because they kind of set up that, you know, you, if you're the one exposed to the heavy metal, that's where gets bad for you.
Speaker A:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:And so then they have like this almost Jekyll and Hyde moment in like this intergalactic space trial or whatever and you're thinking, oh yeah, no, there it is.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:Like, you know, because there's this whole lil up to, hey, I got this angle on how I'm gonna get off with all this stuff that I actually did.
Speaker B:Yeah, right.
Speaker B:And then the angle was going sideways and you're like, oh, fuck this.
Speaker B:Only to find out that that was the angle.
Speaker B:And apparently the heavy metal has no effect on Dr. Jekyll because of his Mr. Hyde Persona.
Speaker B:And so I sat there going like, this is the face I made throughout the entire movies.
Speaker B:But I was like, there's, there's no consistency now on this thing.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:And for being, you know, the supreme heavy metal ruler of anything and everything, I. I went back and watched parts of this movie again to my everlasting shame to realize that I was like this.
Speaker B:This movie could have happened without the heavy metal.
Speaker A:Very true.
Speaker A:Very true.
Speaker B:It's supposed to be this catalyst.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:Of what goes on.
Speaker B:But you could just tell a bunch of random stories and the heavy metal is really kind of pointless for all of them.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:And at that point, just why bother?
Speaker A:Fair.
Speaker A:It's fair.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Because I was like a futuristic cabbie who got a really nice little setup going, as far as I'm concerned.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Chick turns on him.
Speaker B:You don't need the heavy metal for that.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:Some other catalyst can make that happen.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:You know, so John Carter getting sent to the moon planet or whatever, you could find a different way to transport up there.
Speaker B:You don't need that.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:For that either.
Speaker A:Yep.
Speaker B:And it's just the intergalacting that heavy metal had no concept in Pentagon with the wild alien road trip.
Speaker A:Again, what the.
Speaker B:But I. I did chuckle when they're like, yeah, aliens don't exist.
Speaker A:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker A:As the whole freaking.
Speaker A:The big cat mao looking ship goes in.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Yeah, that.
Speaker B:That made me chuckle.
Speaker B:But I was in there.
Speaker B:Goes like, this doesn't make any.
Speaker B:Any sense as to why you needed this mystical force, except for you needed a way to end the movie with having now the girl who's been shown all these things is now the new hero of the.
Speaker B:The universe.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:When you could have just had your first hero of the universe go ahead and win their fight like they were supposed to.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:So by the end of it, I was going, jj, man,.
Speaker A:I win.
Speaker A:No.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:That's pretty much what I was like, God damn it.
Speaker A:This is a game called I win.
Speaker A:This is.
Speaker A:There must be same rules for everyone.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Dude.
Speaker A:Here's the funny part is if you take the through line out of this, there's some interesting in here.
Speaker A:Like.
Speaker A:And that's the weird piece.
Speaker A:Like, so the.
Speaker A:The last little battle, as weird as it is, but like the last sequence where it's this big dude with the robot arm.
Speaker A:Like, this might have been a little goofy, but, like, that part was pretty cool.
Speaker A:I mean, outside of the unnecessary nudity at the beginning.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:Like, so it's like.
Speaker A:It's so funny where it's.
Speaker A:I'm like, okay, she's only naked to say that she's naked.
Speaker A:That's it.
Speaker A:But then.
Speaker A:So there's a couple of Moments of that.
Speaker A:But outside of that, like the whole.
Speaker A:She goes in, she tears some apart, they capture.
Speaker A:Then the bird comes and say, it's just this whole trap.
Speaker A:Like, I don't mind some of the little vignettes.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:But you're right, the distraction comes from going back and hearing this voice of evil, the heavy metal.
Speaker A:Like it's.
Speaker A:Yeah, it's unnecessary.
Speaker A:It adds no value.
Speaker A:Truly.
Speaker A:It's distracting more than anything else.
Speaker B:Yeah, because the.
Speaker B:Like that last sequence is.
Speaker B:What's the guy's name?
Speaker B:Is it Frank Frazetta?
Speaker A:Yeah, I think so.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:So it's like, I don't know if you've ever seen.
Speaker B:I should have put this on the list.
Speaker B:Now think about it.
Speaker B:You know, hindsight's 20 20, but fire and Ice.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker B:So that last sequence is very similar to Fire and Ice, which is good kind of storytelling.
Speaker A:It's true.
Speaker B:And you have kind of the Frank Frazetta, you know, art style storyline telling, cool kind of giant dragon bird that you can throw in there.
Speaker B:And it's like, that's where I would have enjoyed spending the entire story.
Speaker B:Or dystopian New York, I wouldn't mind there.
Speaker B:Even the galactic one.
Speaker B:But the freaking moon, I was like.
Speaker B:And then the Pentagon alien trip.
Speaker B:I was like, you're doing too much.
Speaker B:Just pick something and stay in it.
Speaker B:And you can still have your through point if you want it, but just stay in one story.
Speaker B:Yeah, I don't need all this extra stuff going through, which is.
Speaker A:I.
Speaker B:More than likely I'm convinced it's just so they could show more nudity without it being overly, like, telegraphed.
Speaker A:Pretty much.
Speaker B:Like, if we change the.
Speaker B:Change the story and change the scenery, then nobody remembers that there was animated boobs 30 seconds ago.
Speaker B:Yeah, because they're new animated boobs.
Speaker A:Oh, God, it's so dumb.
Speaker A:It's so bad, so unnecessary.
Speaker A:How do they get these people to do these voices, dude?
Speaker A:Like, I don't.
Speaker A:Makes no sense to me.
Speaker B:Well, if you go look at the dialogue, like, because you have voice acting rights done at typically a different time than the.
Speaker A:Yeah, that's fair.
Speaker B:Actual animation.
Speaker B:And remember, it's the 80s, so I'm not entirely sure what was in the contract or if they even entirely knew what they were signing up for in its entirety.
Speaker B:Or if it's like, hey, we need you to come read lines for two days.
Speaker B:You're gonna pay $40,000.
Speaker A:That's fair.
Speaker A:That's fair.
Speaker B:I sign up for that.
Speaker A:True, true, true, true.
Speaker A:It's just My voice.
Speaker A:Who cares?
Speaker A:Crazy town.
Speaker B:But it's just it.
Speaker B:This.
Speaker B:I will give it this.
Speaker B:This movie is straight 80s.
Speaker B: for being: Speaker B:This is one of the most 80s movies I've ever seen.
Speaker A:Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.
Speaker B:And got to the point where I was cracking up just because of the.
Speaker B:Oh, yeah.
Speaker B:No, this, this is the 80s wild time.
Speaker B:I wasn't even alive.
Speaker B:But I know that this is straight 80s.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah.
Speaker A:100%.
Speaker A:100%.
Speaker A:There's no doubt.
Speaker A:You watching?
Speaker A:Oh yeah.
Speaker A: It's the: Speaker A:You want to hear something really funny that'll blow your mind?
Speaker A:Yeah, there's a sequel.
Speaker B:No,.
Speaker A:I almost threw it on there to fight.
Speaker A:I almost tried to do an Avatar moment for you, buddy.
Speaker A:Because in the.
Speaker A: In: Speaker A:Oh, and get this.
Speaker A: In: Speaker A:So you could go watch this show in a movie theater.
Speaker B:Well, if you're gonna go through all that, you know, trouble of animating boobs, you might as well put it in the theater.
Speaker A:Have them be big animated boobs.
Speaker B:Yeah, people can go see it multiple times.
Speaker A:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker A:So there is a, A sequel.
Speaker A: Heavy Metal: Speaker A:And it is exactly what you'd think it was.
Speaker A: It's: Speaker A:And again, some decently big actors that did it, but less so in this one.
Speaker A:They're more of like the, like, like there's one actor that.
Speaker A:And I.
Speaker A:You may not know her, but in the 90s, there was an actual.
Speaker A:There was a bunch of like soft core porn movies were like the thing.
Speaker A:Like Skinimax and HBO had all the late night.
Speaker A:And one in the 90s, one of the big actresses was named Julie Strain.
Speaker A:Like, she was like, she was like one of the top tier soft core porn movie actresses and she does one of the voices and then Michael Ironsides does a voice and.
Speaker A:Yeah, so I mean there's some, there's recognizable names, but like.
Speaker A:Yeah, it's so interesting, but it's just as bad as you might think.
Speaker A:And they bring back the ball and.
Speaker A:Yeah, it's wild.
Speaker B:Why?
Speaker A:Yeah, no, it's, it's like.
Speaker A:Yeah, It's.
Speaker B:No, after 20 years, right.
Speaker B:You should have looked back and said, you know what?
Speaker B:Let's fix our mistakes.
Speaker A:Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker B:That's enough time to realize.
Speaker A:Yeah, I, I do think though, if I remember right, and again, it's.
Speaker A:I haven't seen it for ages, but if I remember correctly, it's not so much A vignette type thing where it's like there is an actual story and it's one group of characters and she's trying.
Speaker A:But it.
Speaker A:She goes all over the place if I remember.
Speaker A:Because she's trying to track down her sister or something that was who was kidnapped.
Speaker A:Anyway, it's weird.
Speaker A:It's just as weird and it's probably a worse movie it.
Speaker A:If I remember.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:Like.
Speaker A:Because there wasn't the originality to it.
Speaker A:And like.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker A:It was like an obvious.
Speaker A:Let's do this.
Speaker A:Because it was quirky and people thought.
Speaker A:Because here's the thing is in the 80s too like heavy metal people were like, this is cool.
Speaker A:Like okay, you're crazy.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Expectations were a little bit different in the 80s but.
Speaker A:But yeah, there's a sequel.
Speaker B:Well, because I'm just running through my mind, right, because in the 70s and 80s you had a lot of like really good animation that.
Speaker B:Oh yeah, not Disney.
Speaker B:Because I'm just thinking.
Speaker B:I mean.
Speaker B:Yeah, it was a lot of weird animation too.
Speaker A:Oh for sure.
Speaker B:Ralph back.
Speaker B:She's a weird motherfucker.
Speaker B:But it's good animation.
Speaker B:And then.
Speaker B:Then you just have like this thrown in the mix as the weird red headed stepchild.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:But here's the funny part is this one.
Speaker A:And then what you were talking about.
Speaker B:Fire and Ice.
Speaker A:Fire and Ice.
Speaker A:Like all of that really inspired because I.
Speaker A:You were just a little pup.
Speaker A:But like in the 90s too, like animation was a weird.
Speaker A:Like there was the normal Disney and like, you know, like the Aladdins and the Lion Kings that are all the 90s.
Speaker A:But there was also weird ass in the 90s, like Aeon Flux.
Speaker A:And then there was like the whole MTV had a liquid something or other.
Speaker A:I don't even remember what it was called, but it was like this late night, three in the morning animated show that was like.
Speaker A:That's where A un Flux came from.
Speaker A:There was like seriously weird ass.
Speaker A:And it is very.
Speaker A:You can't watch that and go, oh yeah.
Speaker A:There's no connection to Heavy metal or Fire and Ice.
Speaker A:Like there is a.
Speaker A:An honest.
Speaker A:Like let's make some weird ass animation.
Speaker A:I mean Ren and Stimpy, for Christ's sake.
Speaker A:Like Beavis and Butthead.
Speaker A:Like Mike Judge watched heavy metal as a kid.
Speaker A:Like there's no question because like there's that.
Speaker A: ably through the early to mid: Speaker A:Darkness, like quirky.
Speaker A:It's all there.
Speaker A:And you look at it and go, okay, that feels very heavy metal.
Speaker A:And so it's.
Speaker A:It's wild.
Speaker B: Well, all the way up till: Speaker A:I'm telling you though, you need to watch Love, Death and Robots because I think you'll like it because it's.
Speaker A:There's some that you'll be like, what the.
Speaker A:But then there's others that like.
Speaker A:There's one where there's like these werewolves.
Speaker A:These soldiers are like werewolves.
Speaker A:Me, dude, dope.
Speaker A:And then there's one that had.
Speaker A:What's his name?
Speaker A:Tay Diggs.
Speaker A:I think is.
Speaker A:Is a voice for one of them.
Speaker A:And he and his partner end up in this, like with this robot that's trying to kill him or something.
Speaker A:I don't remember.
Speaker A:But then there's like another one where it's this goofy like ragtag group of robots wandering through like a dystopian type.
Speaker A:And they're funny as.
Speaker A:So I mean there's a lot of really good.
Speaker A:That's in Love, Death and robots.
Speaker A:Some very interesting story.
Speaker A:The most recent season I've heard has like a full DND story with like Tiamat the dragon God.
Speaker A:Like it.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:It's.
Speaker A:They've stepped up their game in the vignette animation level.
Speaker A:But you.
Speaker A:But there's no denying it was inspired by Heavy Metal Nut.
Speaker A:You can't.
Speaker A:You cannot watch it and go, no.
Speaker A:There's no connection at all.
Speaker A:You're kidding yourself.
Speaker A:It's 100% influenced by this movie.
Speaker A:Great.
Speaker B:Now all animation is ruined for me.
Speaker A:I know.
Speaker A:You're welcome.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:If you watch 80s and 90s animation.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:This is.
Speaker A:This.
Speaker A:This is it pulls from this.
Speaker A:I don't care.
Speaker A:Unless it's Disney.
Speaker A:Right?
Speaker A:Like the kid.
Speaker B:The Black Cauldron pulls from this.
Speaker A:I don't.
Speaker A:I know it.
Speaker A:There's.
Speaker B:There's aspects of Disney's that pull from this.
Speaker A:True, true.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Anyway, you're not gonna tell me that freaking robo arm is not end up inspiring the Horned King from the Black Cauldron?
Speaker A:Did not even think about that.
Speaker A:That's funny.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker A:I see you some.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:Let's rate it.
Speaker B:Your movie.
Speaker A:My movie.
Speaker A:I go first.
Speaker A:Look.
Speaker A:Gonna give this movie a one.
Speaker A:It's terrible.
Speaker A:It's.
Speaker A:It's not even worth the watch if.
Speaker A:Unless you're like just wanting to see if you're looking at it going, I want to understand some weird ass from the early 80s.
Speaker A:This will.
Speaker A:This will give You a glimpse of the dis.
Speaker A:Despot nature of some of the underground that was going on and like the fact that this became a mainstream movie and people talked about it and it was like the 80s were weird.
Speaker A:Late 70s, early 80s were weird.
Speaker A:And there's, there's very few better in like, indications of that than this film.
Speaker A:But I don't recommend it.
Speaker A:I won't watch it again unless I'm forced to for some other reason.
Speaker A:I hadn't watched it in probably 30 years plus, if not, yeah, probably 30ish.
Speaker A:But I had seen little bits of it, like clips of it on YouTube channels, things like that, where I'm like, oh my God.
Speaker A:And then like again, I'll see posters and it has one of the most recognizable sets of posters.
Speaker A:It that there is like the one that's on if you're watching us on YouTube, the one that's on screen right now.
Speaker A:There's like the main one that was on the video.
Speaker A:Like they.
Speaker A:People see it and go, oh, heavy metal.
Speaker A:Okay, they may not have ever seen it, but they've seen that poster and they've heard of it.
Speaker A:It's.
Speaker A:It's that kind of infamous.
Speaker A:So.
Speaker A:But yeah, one for me.
Speaker A:I'll avoid watching it.
Speaker A:Don't see it unless you want to just feel weird after because that's about the only way I think you could feel.
Speaker A:So.
Speaker A:All right, brother, your turn.
Speaker B:I also went 30 ish years without seeing this movie.
Speaker B:Just wasn't in between re watches.
Speaker B:God damn.
Speaker B:I'm gonna give it a 0.5.
Speaker B:And I think that's a generous 0.5.
Speaker A:Probably.
Speaker A:Probably.
Speaker B:I.
Speaker B:There's, there's no reason to ever watch this movie.
Speaker B:Don't try and say that.
Speaker B:It's for research for the 80s and 70s.
Speaker B:There's, there's better movies out there that are just as weird and actually better.
Speaker B:So watch those instead.
Speaker B:The only reason to watch this for any kind of research purposes, if you're motherfucking lying and you just want to see anime boobs, fair.
Speaker B:Better places to find.
Speaker B:So either way, nobody, nobody should ever watch this movie ever again.
Speaker A:Ever.
Speaker B:Never, never, never ever freaking IMDb.
Speaker B:Coming up.
Speaker B:Getting into JJ's algorithm to fuck with my life.
Speaker B:So yeah, 0.5.
Speaker B:I definitely will never watch this movie again.
Speaker B:Not a thousand years.
Speaker B:Yeah, ever.
Speaker A:Stupid you.
Speaker A:You all know how.
Speaker A:How broken we are as a society.
Speaker A:This Movie gets a 6.6 on IMDb.
Speaker B:You are all terrible people.
Speaker A:What does he get on Rotten Tomatoes?
Speaker A:I will say as I'm looking this.
Speaker B:Up, everyone in the world is wrong.
Speaker B:You guys are all terrible people.
Speaker A:There is.
Speaker A:There is one very positive thing about this movie.
Speaker A:Can you guess what I'm gonna say?
Speaker B:No, there's no posits about this movie.
Speaker A:There are no music.
Speaker B:Oh, right.
Speaker A:Like the music's dope because it's got some massive.
Speaker A:Because that was another thing.
Speaker A:And listen, money's money, right?
Speaker B:Doesn't count because it's from the 80s.
Speaker B:Of course the music is good.
Speaker A:But dude, the names of the.
Speaker A:And I love that in the opening credits like they have the.
Speaker A:The longest list of anything that's there is the bands that gave music that let him use music.
Speaker A:So on Rotten Tomatoes, this has a 66 and 67 rotten.
Speaker A:So much higher than I anticipated.
Speaker A:But there it is.
Speaker B:There's some out there.
Speaker A:Oh.
Speaker B:Who should never run for political office fair.
Speaker A:Oh, well that's.
Speaker A:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker A:Because they were definitely getting off to some animated booze.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:Golly.
Speaker A:And creepy animated sex with that.
Speaker A:Alec, tell everybody where they can find us when we're not avoiding the green ball of evil.
Speaker B:We're always avoiding the green ball of evil.
Speaker B:There's nowhere to find us.
Speaker B:YouTube is the best place to check us out.
Speaker B:Where you can see our smiling faces, terrified faces, sad faces, mad faces, glad faces, bad faces, and all the different kind of faces we make while we're recording.
Speaker B:Absolute horseshit.
Speaker B:Aside from that, Patreon is the best place to get involved with our content.
Speaker B:What's our verdict?
Speaker B:Reviews.
Speaker B:You can vote to give us topics.
Speaker B:Vote to give us movies within those topics that we pick.
Speaker B:And there are real world consequences for losing a vote.
Speaker B:I lost this month.
Speaker B:So in addition to having to watch this stupid ass movie, a list of movies that I do not want to watch has been put on the Patreon for purchase that Jake D.J.
Speaker B:Picked because he's a bastard.
Speaker B:Yes, if you win a month, your list comes down.
Speaker B:Other person list goes up.
Speaker B:So real world consequences and I have lost this month, so my list is up.
Speaker B:But aside from that, behind a little bit of paywall on Patreon, voting is absolutely free.
Speaker B:But behind a little bit of Paywall we do have upwards of 700 extra bonus content episodes.
Speaker B:Everything from full length movies all the way down to bloopers, outtakes and reels of us shooting the if you wanted to a little bit of paywall, you can have access to all that content.
Speaker B:And there are some doozies of episodes on there that nobody should ever have watched.
Speaker B:And we did, multiple times in fact.
Speaker B:So those are all available on Patreon with that I'll kick it back to.
Speaker B:Wait, no.
Speaker B:Should probably mention Dubby GG.
Speaker B:Use our code.
Speaker B:Our verdict.
Speaker B:All caps for 10 off of your order.
Speaker B:Helps out the podcast a little bit.
Speaker B:And special shout out to our lovely patrons, Rich and cb.
Speaker B:Now I'll kick it back to the Titan of Terror, the Colossus of Clout.
Speaker B:Oh jj.
Speaker A:Yes sir.
Speaker A:Thank you, Alec.
Speaker A:Normally I'd have something cute and funny to say right here, but I'm just gonna let heavy metal do that, speaking for me.
Speaker A:And we'll say we appreciate you tuning in as always, and we'll catch you on the next one.
Speaker B:Hasta la vista, baby.
Speaker A:Cinematic out.
