Scary Movie (2000)
We conclude that Scary Movie is a disjointed and largely unsuccessful parody that attempts to satirize numerous films but fails to achieve coherence or sustained comic effect. We explain that the film aggregates references to more than twenty titles, and that this excess fragments the narrative and disrupts comedic timing. We acknowledge that a few segments, particularly those rooted in stereotype and racial comedy performed by the Wayans family, provoke genuine laughter, yet such moments are intermittent and do not redeem the whole. We criticize the film’s reliance on shock and sexual gags, which frequently register as awkward rather than humorous. We report that we assigned the film a very low score and do not plan to rewatch it. We note that patrons selected this viewing and that we will proceed with the rest of our October horror series, with Scream as the next focal point.

Speaker A:Welcome to the what's a Verdict podcast where we fashion ourselves cinematic judge and jury.
Speaker A:My name is JJ Carter.
Speaker A:I'm here with my co host Alec Burgess.
Speaker B:Let's get it.
Speaker A:We appreciate you tuning in.
Speaker A:Go and hit that.
Speaker A:Follow subscribe like bell notification buttons.
Speaker A:Tell a friend about us.
Speaker A:Tell a family member about us.
Speaker A:Tell some.
Speaker A:I'm just tell all the ridiculous human beings that you know about us.
Speaker A:We're okay with that.
Speaker A:They may not like what I have to say about this movie, but we're okay if you tell them.
Speaker A:Don't.
Speaker A:I don't even know what to say on this one.
Speaker A:With what we're just going to get past this and move on and talk about wg.
Speaker A:Like our.
Speaker A:I guess we are in a new month.
Speaker A:I should recognize the fact that we are in a new month.
Speaker A:We tried something new too.
Speaker A:Which in hindsight after this week, I'm okay with it.
Speaker A:This week not so much.
Speaker A:But yeah, we.
Speaker A:We let our patrons decide.
Speaker A:And Charles as is his.
Speaker A:His way.
Speaker A:I was surprised.
Speaker A:It took long longer than I expected.
Speaker A:I think he had some stuff going on but he finally popped in gave some movie recommendations.
Speaker A:So these are all Patreon exclusive movies.
Speaker A:They were chosen.
Speaker A:We had nothing to do with the selection.
Speaker B:We just took the first so don't blame us.
Speaker A:Yeah, not our fault.
Speaker A:We just took the first.
Speaker A:What is it?
Speaker A:Four movies that was on the list and away we went.
Speaker A:But with that.
Speaker A:So it's all horror movies kind of Halloween theme and we're in the month of October so welcome to scary movies.
Speaker A:It's Alex least favorite and we do.
Speaker B:It quite a bit despite being my least favorite and somehow I'm always the one who suggested.
Speaker A:I know as I say I had nothing to do with this one.
Speaker A:This was all you and it's that.
Speaker B:Low hanging fruit concept.
Speaker A:Charles was more or less kind to you like he was.
Speaker A:It was there could have been way worse that he picked.
Speaker A:I was surprised and pleased at the same time.
Speaker A:But anyway, let's jump in and talk about W. GG there.
Speaker A:You guys should be paying attention if you haven't been.
Speaker A:They've been adding a lot of flavors.
Speaker A:They've been re upping some old flavors that have been sold out.
Speaker A:Go check them out.
Speaker A:W. GG they make energy supplements using green coffee bean extract.
Speaker A:You know I used to be real confident with that and then you it up.
Speaker A:And now I'm all like paranoid about it up myself, so.
Speaker A:But yeah, green coffee bean extract.
Speaker A:They're delicious.
Speaker A:They have tons of flavors.
Speaker A:They work really well.
Speaker A:All you need is this teeny little scoop here.
Speaker A:Those watching on YouTube.
Speaker A:I'll show you all the scoops buried.
Speaker B:I'm gonna make a shirt, I think that says coffee green bean extract.
Speaker A:See?
Speaker A:I know, right?
Speaker A:Look at this little scoop.
Speaker A:That's all you need is one of those in your, in your.
Speaker A:I think it's like 20 ounces of water, 16 ounces of water.
Speaker A:And it's delicious and it works.
Speaker A:Very little crash.
Speaker A:None of that jittery that I got on a lot of those canned energy drinks.
Speaker A:So go check them out and you can get 10 off with code.
Speaker A:Our verdict at checkout.
Speaker A:That's our verdict.
Speaker A:All one word and check out and you get 10 off.
Speaker A:We do get a small commission, so it does help podcasts as well.
Speaker A:So we appreciate that.
Speaker A:But yeah, go check them out.
Speaker A:They're, they're re upping.
Speaker A:They got new cups.
Speaker A:They got their slime cups back.
Speaker A:So yeah, they're, it's really fun.
Speaker A:Go check them out.
Speaker A:Lots of stuff with that.
Speaker A:Let's jump into this week's movie.
Speaker A:It is scary movie.
Speaker A: ,: Speaker A:It was written by Sean Wayans, Marlon Wayans and Buddy Johnson.
Speaker A:It's directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans and it stars Anna Faris, John Abrahams, Marlon Wayans, Karma Electra, Dave Sheridan, Frank Moore, Giacomo Basado, Rick de Coleman, Karen Cooper, Regina Hall, Shannon Elizabeth and Sherry o'.
Speaker A:Terry.
Speaker A:It's about.
Speaker A:Okay, a year after disposing of the body of a man, they accidentally killed a group of dumb teenagers who stalked by a bumbling serial killer.
Speaker A:I mean it works, but whatever.
Speaker A:I, yeah, I don't.
Speaker A:I think we'll just alternate who goes first because none of these are our picks.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:So we'll just alternate.
Speaker A:I'll go first.
Speaker A:You, Charles, I.
Speaker A:Listen, I love you dude, but you, I, I.
Speaker A:And I think I know he knows.
Speaker A:Like there's no.
Speaker A:Because we've talked about my distaste for dumbass humor so much and this is the kind of that I imagine and he's not here to defend himself, but him too.
Speaker A:I imagine Matson laughing his ever loving ass off with this ridiculous horseshit.
Speaker A:This is not funny.
Speaker A:I went and saw it when it first came out because next week's movie, it's one of my favorite movies of all time.
Speaker A:Scream.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:So you See this.
Speaker A:And at the time when this came out, like, slashers were a big thing.
Speaker A:The horror movies were a major concept.
Speaker A:And I mean, they always have been, they always will be, I think.
Speaker A:But like, I think that was peak slasher horror in the, like the back end of the peak.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker A:I think the golden age started at the early 80s, late 70s, rolled through the late 80s, then it kind of got dumb and shitty because they just kept making sequel after sequel.
Speaker A:And then in the mid-90s, late-90s, there was this resurgence of slashers.
Speaker A:And it started with next week's movie Scream.
Speaker A:In my opinion, when you go back, you can kind of track that.
Speaker A:And it was worth every second.
Speaker A:When that movie came out, it changed the genre.
Speaker A:It was awesome.
Speaker A:Then they start making these things.
Speaker A:And I love a good parody, but I need some intelligence with the parody.
Speaker A:And there is very little, if any in the.
Speaker A:This is pure garbage ass.
Speaker A:Let's just do every Monday.
Speaker A:Un mundane, ridiculous idea that comes into our head and we'll tie it somehow into horror movies and we'll have, you know, these.
Speaker A:What's the term?
Speaker A:Like the.
Speaker A:The guest appearances and cameos and all this.
Speaker A:And it is.
Speaker A:It's terrible.
Speaker A:There's.
Speaker A:There's no.
Speaker A:I hate this movie.
Speaker A:I hate all of them.
Speaker A:I don't like the spin.
Speaker A:Not another teenage movie, the superhero movie.
Speaker A:All of them that were made after this ridiculous came out, they're terrible.
Speaker A:And they only got worse.
Speaker A:It's not like any of them got better.
Speaker A:They got worse.
Speaker A:So I'll leave.
Speaker A:I'm sure we'll talk in detail, but I'll leave it at that.
Speaker A:Tell me how you feel about.
Speaker B:So this first time I've seen this really Movie too as well.
Speaker A:That I believe.
Speaker B:But I.
Speaker B:So there was a handful of parts where I was laughing and it was because I was like, that.
Speaker B:That to me is funny.
Speaker A:Sure.
Speaker B:It's.
Speaker B:It's all the stereotypical parts that they threw in here.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:And like.
Speaker B:But I was saying.
Speaker B:But like, started off, I'm like, this is stupid.
Speaker B:And throughout the entire thing, except for it was probably four total moments.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Where I was like, this is dumb.
Speaker B:Why.
Speaker B:Why am I watching this?
Speaker B:Because it isn't.
Speaker B:It isn't scary.
Speaker A:No.
Speaker B:So it's.
Speaker B:It's.
Speaker B:Aside from the parts where I did laugh, I was like, it's not very funny either.
Speaker B:And it doesn't even have the kind of.
Speaker B:Where you'd.
Speaker B:It doesn't fit anywhere.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:That makes any sense because it doesn't have like, gore or violence.
Speaker B:That would be over the top, either.
Speaker B:And so to me, it's.
Speaker B:It's.
Speaker B:It's that parody where they just went.
Speaker B:But almost like a ripoff parody.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:You're getting at with the thing because it's.
Speaker B:It's scene for scene reshot almost.
Speaker B:And it.
Speaker B:It was cracking me up a little bit because I watched this first.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:So I didn't seen next week's movie Scream, and I watched this one before it.
Speaker B:And so for a lot of us going, what the.
Speaker B:And then I watched Scream, and I was like, oh, there we go.
Speaker B:And so then it came back.
Speaker B:I was like, oh, no.
Speaker B:They.
Speaker B:They literally pretty much reshot Not.
Speaker B:Not the entire thing, frame for frame.
Speaker B:But there are sequences in here that are reshot frame for frame pretty much with the original screen.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:And then just like, okay, here's our 10 minutes.
Speaker B:What?
Speaker B:What?
Speaker B:10 Minutes of, you know, just crazy, stupid comedy.
Speaker B:Can we fit into there to make it this parody?
Speaker B:And it's like, they didn't land all the way.
Speaker B:And so the enjoyable moments for me are where they had that little bit of, okay, we want this particular joke in here.
Speaker A:Yep.
Speaker B:And so, like, the.
Speaker B:The first thing that really kind of got me, as stupid as it sounds, was the popcorn.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:Where the popcorn's just like.
Speaker A:It's fair.
Speaker B:It's like a weather balloon at the point.
Speaker B:And I was just.
Speaker B:I was just sitting there going, like, yeah.
Speaker B:And that's because it's.
Speaker B:It's just almost a quick little visual cue that lets you know, like, oh, hey, this is.
Speaker B:This is what you signed up for.
Speaker B:And so that got a chuckle out of me, but for the most part, I was just kind of like, this is just like it.
Speaker B:It felt like a lot of SNL skits.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:That were in parody form.
Speaker A:Well, you don't even do snl.
Speaker A:These aren't even SNL level.
Speaker A:These are like, Mad TV level at best, dude.
Speaker A:Like, terrible.
Speaker B:Sure.
Speaker B:But it was just that level of skit where.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:One or two of them landed.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:But the.
Speaker B:And you could almost even see that the actors who are doing it don't really necessarily want to be there.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:All the time.
Speaker B:It's like they're.
Speaker B:They're going through the motions.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:They're going through the motions on it.
Speaker B:And so it was that.
Speaker B:Where it's just like, there's.
Speaker B:There's so much that's not good about it.
Speaker B:But there was a couple.
Speaker B:The other kind of weird part of is the.
Speaker B:That I didn't like, but kind of appreciated, I'll say, is the Meshing of several movies.
Speaker A:Sure.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:Like when we get to the end and the big reveal happens.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:We got to pull straight from Usual Suspects.
Speaker A:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker B:And so at that point, you kind of have to go back, hey, so what.
Speaker B:What movies did they go and pull from?
Speaker B:It's like 45 of them.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:It's a lot.
Speaker B:They did.
Speaker B:It's a lot.
Speaker B:At that point you're like, okay.
Speaker B:At that point it's almost just come up with your own stuff because you're just pulling the.
Speaker B:The Wayne's family is extremely talented.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:So this is like low hanging fruit of them going out and saying, we're gonna take this and this and this.
Speaker B:And because we're who we are, we're.
Speaker B:We're good enough to make it successful.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Just make your own thing.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Because you guys are good enough to make it successful.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:I mean, and they did, right.
Speaker A:Like, you think that, like, yeah, look at white chicks.
Speaker A:That movie's funny.
Speaker A:And that's them.
Speaker A:It's the same people.
Speaker A:It's.
Speaker A:You know what I mean?
Speaker A:And, and so it's like, you know, they can make original content that's funny.
Speaker A:And I get what they were trying to do here, but like, there's so many good parody films out there, like Spaceballs and Hot Shots.
Speaker A:The original.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:Like, there's so many that you can.
Speaker A:But.
Speaker A:But the difference is, and I think you hit it on the head, at least for me, is they tried to take a whole genre and compact it into one movie where most parodies will take a movie, maybe two, and go, okay, let's make fun of it.
Speaker A:Like, and I think about Spaceballs, right?
Speaker A:Like, it's Star Wars.
Speaker A:They're trying to make fun of Star wars.
Speaker A:And it works because they take all of the major parts of Star wars and then they make fun of it in a goofy way.
Speaker A:It's very intelligence, like the Schwartz and the, the lightsabers coming out of the ring, only it looks like your dick.
Speaker A:And then, you know, like the Winnebago, that's their space.
Speaker A:That's piece of Winnebago.
Speaker A:That's a piece of millennium.
Speaker A:You know what I mean?
Speaker A:So it's like all of those things work because they're intentional and they're.
Speaker A:They're built around something specific.
Speaker A:This one, I, I understand what they were trying to do, and I appreciate the effort.
Speaker A:I mean, I'm not going to sit and say that this is an easy thing to do.
Speaker A:And obviously it worked on some level, which makes me.
Speaker A:Every time I said about It.
Speaker A:Yeah, like it.
Speaker A:The fact that there's like seven of these things or whatever.
Speaker A:And they.
Speaker A:Or really more than that when you get outside the horror part.
Speaker A:But there's at least five or six scary movies.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:And.
Speaker A:And I'm like, that means people watch this and they liked it and they paid for it.
Speaker A:So there's enough money and enough stuff coming in that they're like, let's do it again.
Speaker A:And I'm like, I.
Speaker A:What's it.
Speaker A:If there's a guy that makes videos on Tick Tock that like he'll play video like the whole football game.
Speaker A:And he's got this clip with this goofy goof, like actual goofy, but he's a dinkalink looking one.
Speaker A:He's like, I'll do it again.
Speaker A:Like, that's what all I think about.
Speaker A:When I think about.
Speaker A:They went, let's make.
Speaker A:I'll do it again.
Speaker A:Like, I'm like, no, don't, please.
Speaker A:But it just.
Speaker A:They did too much, I think is what I'm trying to say.
Speaker A:They went, okay.
Speaker A:I think if they had just stuck to like scream.
Speaker A:And maybe I know what you did last summer, but when you throw in the Exorcist, know what you did last summer?
Speaker A:Scream.
Speaker A:What's the other ones that they did?
Speaker B:Like, usual suspects.
Speaker A:Well, yeah, usual suspects.
Speaker A:But like there's just so many and it.
Speaker A:And then it gets convoluted and it gets like whiplash.
Speaker A:And I'm like, unless I'm there for just nothing.
Speaker A:Like I'm just there to watch ridiculousness that has nothing to do with anything.
Speaker A:Because that's the other thing that most parodies to me.
Speaker A:Like, there's still a storyline there.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:That makes sense.
Speaker A:And it's, it's trackable.
Speaker A:And you're like, okay, I get it.
Speaker A:This one is all over the place.
Speaker A:And I think when I finally decided that, like, I was trying to give it a chance because I love the Wayans brother.
Speaker A:Like, I think like you said, what they do most of the time is hilarious.
Speaker A:Damon Wayans is one of the funniest people I've ever seen on film.
Speaker A:And so I was like, I want to give this a chance.
Speaker A:But when they get to the, the sex scene and like that I just was like, I can't, I. I can't.
Speaker A:Like, because I was sitting there and everybody.
Speaker A:It was terrible.
Speaker A:I'm in the theater, I remember as 19 years old or whatever.
Speaker A:And I'm sitting there and I'm.
Speaker A:I should be laughing at something like.
Speaker A:But I was wanting.
Speaker A:Everybody's laughing And I'm like, really?
Speaker A:Do you guys think that's funny?
Speaker A:How is that funny?
Speaker A:And I was like, I just don't get it.
Speaker A:So that's where I was like, I'm cooked.
Speaker A:And I just, I was done.
Speaker A:I sat and waited for the rest of the movie because I paid for the but.
Speaker A:And by then I'm.
Speaker A:I'm pot committed.
Speaker A:I mean, you're three quarters to the movie by the time that happens.
Speaker A:But that shut me down.
Speaker A:That whole scene shut me down.
Speaker B:So controversial take.
Speaker B:I think the weigh ins are best when they stick with racial comedy.
Speaker A:Agreed.
Speaker B:You pointed out with white chicks.
Speaker B:And oddly enough, the two scenes that I laughed my ass off are the news.
Speaker B:News reporter scene where you have like the black news station that's like white folks getting murdered.
Speaker B:We're getting out of you.
Speaker B:Dude didn't even get out of the van.
Speaker B:And they peel out.
Speaker B:I was cackling.
Speaker B:And then the second one is during the movie theater.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker B:People gang up on.
Speaker B:I think it was Brenda.
Speaker A:Yep.
Speaker B:She's talking in the movie.
Speaker B:She's got the phone on speaker and she's doing all these stereotypical things.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:And they use that.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:And then you have like all their stuff is really as bad as it may sound like they thrive in this kind of racial comedy.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah.
Speaker B:And it's funny.
Speaker B:They make it really, really funny.
Speaker B:And it's almost like stick in there.
Speaker B:Because like you're saying the, the sex scene.
Speaker B:Like it's like, okay, kind of.
Speaker B:It's.
Speaker B:It's like that.
Speaker B:That should be funny.
Speaker A:Should.
Speaker B:But when it happens isn't.
Speaker B:Their timing is off.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:And so if you take it in a vacuum.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:And you just clip about that two minutes or whatever, it's hilarious.
Speaker B:Yeah, but the problem is the timing.
Speaker B:They don't have the timing for that.
Speaker B:Yeah, but they do have the timing for white chicks.
Speaker B:And everything else that they've done when it pertains to racial comedy is hilarious.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah, agreed.
Speaker B:And so it's almost like stick there because that's funny.
Speaker B: pretty much movies, nineteen: Speaker B:And we're gonna go right here.
Speaker B:Every single movie down the list.
Speaker A:Yeah, I'm looking it up.
Speaker A:I'm curious, see what it says here.
Speaker A:20 To 22 films.
Speaker B:Yeah, it's too many of that mood.
Speaker A:Listen, okay, here's this list.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker A:Scream.
Speaker A:Obviously, I Know what you did last summer?
Speaker A:Obviously, you got the Matrix.
Speaker A:Oh.
Speaker A:Because they did a little bullet time.
Speaker B:Bullet time.
Speaker A:And.
Speaker A:And then this.
Speaker A:Usual Suspects, of course.
Speaker A:Like, you call it out.
Speaker A:I see dead people.
Speaker A:So Sixth Sense, Halloween, the killer disappearing after getting knocked down.
Speaker A:Right?
Speaker A:Like, that's his thing.
Speaker A:The Shining, the Red Room, the Exorcist.
Speaker A:That one's an easy one.
Speaker A:American Pie, the Bedroom Accident.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:And then election.
Speaker A:Like, those are some of the top ones.
Speaker A:Like the overzealous student campaign character.
Speaker A:And then you've got the Blair Witch, Titanic, Thelma and Louise, Schindler's List, Amistad, Shakespeare in Love, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the Fugitive, Boogie Nights, Kazam.
Speaker A:Like, how do you make something cohesive when you have 20 to 20 different.
Speaker A:20 To 22 different movies that you're trying to do?
Speaker A:The only people that have done something like that, that have been successful is Monty Pythons.
Speaker A:Like, because they do it knowing what they're trying to do.
Speaker A:And so they break up their movie into sequences.
Speaker A:And you're like, okay, I've moved on to the next sequence.
Speaker A:And I'm.
Speaker A:This one tries to hold the through line and then insert all these sequences.
Speaker A:And like you said, it comes out like skits.
Speaker A:And it just didn't.
Speaker A:This isn't land for me, but the part of me is.
Speaker A:Is a me problem.
Speaker A:Because the comedy itself is genuinely not my style of comedy right.
Speaker B:At all.
Speaker A:Because even Monty Python movies, like, sometimes I'm like, that's not funny to me because it's me.
Speaker A:This is all that, like.
Speaker A:And then it's in the worst possible delivery method, in my opinion, which makes it just worse.
Speaker A:Like, I don't even laugh much.
Speaker A:Like, there.
Speaker A:I. I'd be a liar if I didn't say sometimes the couple of times I've seen this movie or bits of this movie that there was times I was like, okay.
Speaker A:And I, you know, I do what I'm doing right now and I smile and go, don't laugh.
Speaker A:Because then you're part of the problem.
Speaker A:But it's so.
Speaker A:There are moments, but it just.
Speaker A:It just doesn't land for me at all.
Speaker A:Like, I don't even know what to talk about with it, because it's a mess.
Speaker B:Well, I like that you brought up Money Python.
Speaker B:Because I like them, their sketch comedy.
Speaker B:And I was just thinking about the.
Speaker B:I can't remember the actual group name, but the guys who do Super Troopers.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah.
Speaker A:Something.
Speaker A:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker B:But then.
Speaker B:Then it clicked with me.
Speaker A:The.
Speaker B:I think probably the biggest problem or where the biggest disconnect is.
Speaker B:Is in Monty Python.
Speaker B:The Monty Python crew starring in Super Troopers.
Speaker B:It's that lizard crew is starring in Scary Movie.
Speaker B:Your Wayans family are side characters or they're.
Speaker B:They're part of a larger kind of cast that's introducing other styles, other people coming in.
Speaker B:And the.
Speaker B:The brain behind it is the Waynes family.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:That's them.
Speaker B:They're the ones who are really driving it forward, but they're not in kind of that leading, controlling role like they are when they're in White Chicks.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:And so when you're.
Speaker B:When you're the ones who are writing and then acting it out, it lands, I think, a lot better versus, you know, they're adding like a good cast around them.
Speaker B:But at that point, you're adding an extra level where you're at.
Speaker B:You're writing for somebody else or you're creating for somebody else.
Speaker B:And they're not always going to have the.
Speaker B:The same kind of comedy flow and timing as you.
Speaker B:And that.
Speaker B:That was what I mentioned.
Speaker B:Like, I have a problem with the timing doesn't always seem to add up.
Speaker B:And it probably is because it's more than just the Wayans family, which I would have changed it and put the entire Wayans family in here because there's enough of Wayans family members to have the full cast, plus more of town in that family.
Speaker A:Oh, 100 is Kim Wayans.
Speaker A:She's in it, right?
Speaker A:I can't remember who she's in.
Speaker A:Their Sister.
Speaker B:Yeah, I think so.
Speaker A:Because she's funny as well.
Speaker B:Family is hilarious.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah.
Speaker A:You make a good point though, because there's a lot of people that just don't land.
Speaker A:Like.
Speaker A:And I know this one is controversial because.
Speaker A:But Anna Ferris, I don't find her that funny.
Speaker B:It's.
Speaker B:She's like a ditzy funny and it's very deadpan.
Speaker B:And it doesn't work here.
Speaker B:It works in a movie like Just Friends or Waiting or.
Speaker A:Yes.
Speaker B:Something else where, like, people can act around her.
Speaker B:Mm.
Speaker B:But it doesn't work in really this.
Speaker B:Because I just don't believe it.
Speaker A:No.
Speaker A:Yeah, I just.
Speaker A:And again.
Speaker A:But I like what you say too about her timing.
Speaker A:And it's the movie.
Speaker A:Like, there's not a lot of.
Speaker B:And.
Speaker A:And listen, if you're a fan of comedy comedies, I would argue 90, 80, 90% timing.
Speaker A:Like.
Speaker A:And you're right.
Speaker A:Like even the.
Speaker A:Those individual jokes.
Speaker A:But you're also relying on Carmen Electra to goddamn land a joke.
Speaker A:Like, I never understood the obsession with Carmen Electra.
Speaker A:Besides, she's Got great tits.
Speaker A:That someone, you know what I mean?
Speaker A:Like, and that's.
Speaker A:And I, but, but here's the thing is like I know they put her in this but like she was like monstrously.
Speaker A:I guess she was one of the early people that like I'm like, why are they famous again?
Speaker A:Oh, I mean tits and ass.
Speaker A:That's it.
Speaker A:Because I don't see any other talent besides the fact that she got naked for Playboy and everybody went woo, she's gorgeous.
Speaker A:Which she was.
Speaker A:Is.
Speaker A:She can't act.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:And, and her timing was terrible.
Speaker A:And you're right, I think back on it having re watched it now and it'd been a long time.
Speaker A:The weigh ins are funny like because their timing's good.
Speaker A:So when they are in it to.
Speaker B:Your point, they're funny.
Speaker A:There were moments I was like, okay, that would have been funny if I didn't hate that.
Speaker A:I'm watching this movie again right now.
Speaker A:Shannon Elizabeth's the same way.
Speaker A:Like she has a little more talent for acting than a lot of the people in it.
Speaker A:But her comedy timing wasn't there in this movie.
Speaker A:Even in American Pie, I would argue she wasn't the funniest part of the cast.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:She's just the tits and ass.
Speaker A:And, and I liked her more in like 13 ghosts, like an actual horror movie which I still need to get you to watch because that, that movie will you up.
Speaker A:That's the kind of movie you, you're like, I'm out anyway.
Speaker A:So.
Speaker A:But yeah, like I, I just, I think you're.
Speaker A:The more you're talking about it.
Speaker A:Like I've always just been like, this is just a shitty movie.
Speaker A:And I just think they tried to do too much and then didn't lean on the strengths that they did have in the right way.
Speaker A:Because when they thinking back on it now when, when you say that the more I look on it, when they actually use their power players in comedy, it probably would have been really funny to me if everything around it hadn't been just hot garbage that wasn't funny.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:So it just, just doesn't flow very well.
Speaker B:And.
Speaker B:Yeah, but maybe, I don't know, maybe we're in the minority on that and everybody really loved it.
Speaker A:I mean I don't love it enough.
Speaker B:At least to get six coming out soon, I think because they just.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Every time Scream makes one they like, oh, new scary movie time.
Speaker A:Exactly.
Speaker A:Well, and that's, that's so.
Speaker A:I mean it gets a six out of three on IMDb which is still goddamn, that's horrifying to me.
Speaker A:Like, anyway, I don't, I just don't.
Speaker A:I don't know.
Speaker A:You know what?
Speaker A:It reminds me.
Speaker A:I was thinking about this while I was watching it.
Speaker A:I was like, what else is there?
Speaker A:That, that pissed me off to this level.
Speaker A:That.
Speaker A:That could have been funny.
Speaker A:Had.
Speaker A:Was racked with talent, whatever it was.
Speaker A:There was a movie, and I don't remember what it was called, like Studio 69 or something store.
Speaker A:It had Hugh Jackman.
Speaker A:I mean, it had monstrous actors in it.
Speaker A:Hang on, let me, let me Google it.
Speaker A:But it was, it was bad.
Speaker A:So Hugh Jackman played this character and it was all skits.
Speaker A:Like it was intentionally laid out as like skits.
Speaker A:And it had like serious people in it.
Speaker A:But it was all like.
Speaker A:He played a guy.
Speaker A:They went.
Speaker A:He went to dinner with Kate Winslet on a date, a blind date.
Speaker A:And he had a ball sack hanging from his chin, dude.
Speaker A:And I know I say that and it sounds like it should be movie 43.
Speaker B:Oh, God, I've never seen that.
Speaker A:Don't.
Speaker A:Good.
Speaker A:No, but, but you got to listen to this cast.
Speaker A:I mean, even it gets like a 4.4.
Speaker A:Are you.
Speaker A:You're not ready for this cast, dude.
Speaker A:Emma Stone, Stephen Merchant, Richard Gere, Dennis Quaid, Greg Kinnear, Common, Will Sasso, Charlie Sexton, Odessa Ray, Seth McFarlane, Hugh Jackman, Julie Claire, Anna Madigan, Kate Winslet, Kate Finneran, and the list goes on.
Speaker A:Elizabeth Banks.
Speaker A:I mean, it's, it's insanity.
Speaker A:Casey and I left in the middle of the movie.
Speaker A:It was that bad.
Speaker B:How do you have that much talent?
Speaker B:You make a movie.
Speaker A:And that's why I compare it to this, because they did.
Speaker A:They just.
Speaker A:I swear to God, they sat in a room with a bunch of comedy writers and they went, okay, take your craziest, most up out of the world, like out of bounds and write a skit about it.
Speaker A:And then we took 12 of them and they laid it into a two hour movie or whatever it is.
Speaker A:And then, and it was.
Speaker A:And then we'll go, we're gonna get all these.
Speaker A:I am amazed that they got Hugh Jackman to put a nut sack on hanging from his chin.
Speaker A:And then like it gets cold.
Speaker A:Like there's an air conditioner blowing on top of them.
Speaker A:And it does like the tightening up.
Speaker A:So it's just this little lump of the bottom of it.
Speaker A:I'm like, oh my God.
Speaker A:And then like the waiter goes to take the plate and smacks his balls.
Speaker B:It's.
Speaker A:Dude, it's horrible.
Speaker A:And that's what I think about.
Speaker A:I was watching this movie and I was like, this reminds me of that.
Speaker A:Like, the timing's terrible.
Speaker A:The comedy's not funny.
Speaker A:It's just them.
Speaker A:It's shocking awe comedy.
Speaker A:Like, you laugh and then to me, I'm like, if.
Speaker A:When I do laugh, I'm embarrassed that I'm laughing.
Speaker A:Like, I'm like, oh, no, I shouldn't laugh at this.
Speaker A:But that's what.
Speaker A:Anyway, there was a complete Nutter side rant, but that's what this reminded me of.
Speaker A:Watching it this time.
Speaker B:Well, hearing you talk about it.
Speaker B:I'm sorry.
Speaker B:I know we probably shouldn't talk about it anymore, but, yeah, it.
Speaker B:It almost makes you Wonder if the Mrs. For us anyway are the.
Speaker B:The sexual comedy.
Speaker B:Because you had mentioned that.
Speaker B:And our biggest misses in this.
Speaker B:The sexual ones.
Speaker B:I was thinking about other parodies, and one I landed on was Men in Tights, which I think is really good, except sexual comedy parts.
Speaker A:True.
Speaker B:Which are weird and awkward and they don't land.
Speaker B:And so I wonder if that's the thing is when you're trying to go, like, so far that you just make it too much and overload one side and make it weird.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:From that aspect.
Speaker B:Because then it just.
Speaker B:Then you're pulling everything now and it might not even be a timing issue at that point.
Speaker B:It's just your material where you take your writers, say, give me the most messed up, depraved thing to think of, and here you go, we'll make it funny.
Speaker B:And then it's like, wait a minute.
Speaker B:That actually isn't all that funny.
Speaker A:Yeah, it was.
Speaker A:It's a horrible movie.
Speaker A:Goes right.
Speaker A:Well with this one, because.
Speaker A:Yeah, I'm with you.
Speaker A:Like, I. I don't think.
Speaker A:I don't know.
Speaker A:This is probably my life.
Speaker A:The last thing I was with that, like, and I think not just this movie, but any movie to your point that goes, let's go.
Speaker A:Here's the line.
Speaker A:Right?
Speaker A:Like, here's the extreme.
Speaker A:We know where it is most of the time and.
Speaker A:But let's go here with it.
Speaker A:Let's take it one step further.
Speaker A:And they're like, well, it.
Speaker A:We went here.
Speaker A:Let's go one step further.
Speaker A:And then.
Speaker A:And I'm.
Speaker A:I get the concept behind it.
Speaker A:But, like, there comes a point where the line is really aligned.
Speaker A:Like, you'll run into eventually someone that goes.
Speaker A:That was too far.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:And I'm not.
Speaker A:I've talked about this many times.
Speaker A:I'm not offended by the movie.
Speaker A:Like, I. I get it clear.
Speaker A:Like, you can go as far as you want.
Speaker A:I personally am not gonna.
Speaker B:You're saying, no, thanks.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:It's so hard to offend me.
Speaker B:But I also.
Speaker A:You can go to a point where I go, that's just not funny.
Speaker A:Like, it's not offensive to me, but it's not funny either.
Speaker A:Like, you went too far, and it.
Speaker A:You made it weird.
Speaker A:Like you said, you made it awkward.
Speaker A:And for no reason other than trying to get the cheap laugh from the people that think going that far is funny.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:Because they're, like, awkward.
Speaker A:And even then, I think sometimes they're like, either one, you're a psychopath.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:Or two, you just have an interesting sense of humor.
Speaker A:That.
Speaker A:Or you're laughing because you're uncomfortable, which some people do.
Speaker A:Right?
Speaker A:Like, that was Casey Moon.
Speaker A:Saw that movie 43.
Speaker A:She was giggling, and she.
Speaker A:I can't help it.
Speaker A:I'm so uncomfortable right now.
Speaker A:And I'm like, it's fair.
Speaker A:Because she laughs when she's uncomfortable.
Speaker A:So I don't know.
Speaker A:This is just not.
Speaker A:I mean, thanks, Charles, for picking it.
Speaker A:And you.
Speaker A:But at the same time, like, this is just not like, he picked it.
Speaker A:And I went, oh, God damn it.
Speaker A:Because this is just not my kind of movie in general.
Speaker B:See, now he picked it.
Speaker B:I said, oh, thank God.
Speaker B:Because it wasn't.
Speaker B:Wasn't one of the 45 movies he could have picked that would have destroyed me.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:I honestly thought, oh, he's gonna put Exorcist on here.
Speaker A:We've talked about it.
Speaker A:So he does.
Speaker A:And then I laughed because his comment after, he's like, I'm curious what you guys think of Exorcist too.
Speaker A:And I'm like, well, Alec won't have an opin, but I need to think about it.
Speaker A:And anyway.
Speaker A:But, yeah, I was laughing.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:But it was.
Speaker A:Oh, God, I appreciate that.
Speaker A:He put in some.
Speaker A:Not straight horror, though, for you.
Speaker A:It was good.
Speaker A:It was good.
Speaker A:All right, should we rate this turd?
Speaker B:Let's do it.
Speaker A:All right, I'll go first again.
Speaker B:You win first.
Speaker B:Want me to rate first?
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Yeah, There you go.
Speaker A:Well, there you go.
Speaker A:I like it.
Speaker A:And then next time, you go first, and I'll go first at the end.
Speaker B:There you go.
Speaker A:I like it.
Speaker B:So it's a.
Speaker B:It's a one for me.
Speaker B:And I did have points.
Speaker B:Or there were moments in there where I was giggling and laughing out loud because I was like, that's generally funny.
Speaker B:And it could be that my sense of comedy.
Speaker B:I think racial comedy is funny.
Speaker B:Doesn't matter who you're making fun of making fun of someone's race.
Speaker B:I think it's funny.
Speaker B:And there is, there's a handful of moments in here where the racial comedy is beautiful.
Speaker B:The rest of the comedy is very hit and miss.
Speaker B:And it's, it's a little bit more of the visual stuff we kind of talked about back and forth of.
Speaker B:You know, I think I'm gonna land on.
Speaker B:The biggest problem I have with it is the Wayans family wrote it and they didn't give themselves the, the front and center screen roles.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:As much as they probably should have.
Speaker B:But that being said, I, I won't watch it again.
Speaker B:I can see myself looking at clips.
Speaker A:Sure.
Speaker B:And enjoying the clips of it in a vacuum because I think that's where the actual comedy lies.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:But for that, I, I won't watch it again.
Speaker B:But yeah.
Speaker B:Oh, one.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:I'm gonna, I, I'm gonna give it a 0.5.
Speaker A:I want to give it a 0.
Speaker A:But then I remember that we watched Moonfall.
Speaker B:And you watched Moonfall.
Speaker B:I wasn't here lucky on that deal.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Because that was.
Speaker A:I.
Speaker A:So everything kind of falls back on Moonfall.
Speaker A:And there was another zero that I don't even remember because Moonfall is the one that just keep.
Speaker A:I always go back to.
Speaker A:But yeah.
Speaker A:So 0.5 for me.
Speaker A:Like, I don't, I don't find it funny.
Speaker A:I, I, you're right.
Speaker A:There are a couple, like the, the, the news part.
Speaker A:That shit's funny.
Speaker A:And I'm with you.
Speaker A:Like, I find, I find.
Speaker A:And I won't even go through racial comedy as much as I'll say I love stereotype comedy.
Speaker A:You know, and it could, because it could be about sexuality, it could be about race, it could be about human nature in general.
Speaker A:But if there, if there's like a stereotype that everybody wants to, to deride or celebrate and then we can find a way to make fun of it.
Speaker A:That usually lands because there's some realism in there.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:Like, and there's a level of understanding which I think most comedy needs.
Speaker A:And so you're right.
Speaker A:There were some great ones and there very few do it as well.
Speaker A:Especially when you come to, to racial comedy like that as well as the Wayans do.
Speaker A:Like, even when you go back and look at Mad TV when they were so heavily involved there.
Speaker A:And then you look at the.
Speaker A:Even better.
Speaker A:Was the Wayans Brothers show when Damon, or not Damon, when Marlon and Sean Wayans had their own show for a few years, like, that was hilarious.
Speaker A:So I'm with you.
Speaker A:Like, I But I just think that they tried to do too much, and I get what they were trying to do, and I appreciate it.
Speaker A:Like, I. I can't say that.
Speaker A:Like, I think it should never be made.
Speaker A:I think they could have done better.
Speaker A:I think they could have been more refined with it more pinpointed.
Speaker A:And then I think it could have been a phenomenal movie because I love parodies.
Speaker A:Like, I would have loved to have seen six true parodies.
Speaker A:But pick a movie, maybe two, and then lean into that.
Speaker A:And then the next one is about, you know, the next major horror franchise or whatever it is, but it's just one so that I can stay grounded in that.
Speaker A:And then you add those elements of humor that surround that piece, and it doesn't even have to be related to it.
Speaker A:Like you.
Speaker A:I mean, we get Alien in Spaceballs, right?
Speaker A:Like, yeah, there.
Speaker A:You can throw in other things in there as part of it, but when you try to do all of them in this mage, it just didn't work in this particular case for me at least.
Speaker A:But yeah.5.
Speaker A:I fuck.
Speaker A:I tried to never watch this movie again.
Speaker A:And I can hopefully say now that I won't ever.
Speaker A:And I won't watch any of the others unless somehow it ends up on a list.
Speaker A:Our listing English or else taking notes.
Speaker A:Sounds like.
Speaker A:I know I was gonna say there's a dare if I've ever heard one.
Speaker A:Next thing I know, we're gonna end up with like, goddamn, not another teen movie.
Speaker A:Or some.
Speaker A:I'm like, God damn it, Chris Evans up when he did that movie.
Speaker A:Anyway, so, yeah, there it is.
Speaker A:I looking forward to the rest of this month, but this one, this week was rough for me.
Speaker A:Your boy, you should have seen.
Speaker A:I was like.
Speaker A:I sat and stared at it on my.
Speaker A:On my tv, and I'm like,.
Speaker B:But.
Speaker A:I really don't want to get the play button.
Speaker A:It was so.
Speaker A:I laughed at myself more.
Speaker B:Just like, yeah, avoiding playing the button.
Speaker B:Not gonna do it.
Speaker A:Anything else I could do right now than I did the movie.
Speaker A:So.
Speaker A:Anywho, there it is.
Speaker A:Alec, tell everybody where they can find us when we're not dodging silly caricatures of actual scary horror.
Speaker B:Guys, happy to.
Speaker B:Best place to see us is on YouTube where you see our smiling faces.
Speaker B:Happy faces, glad faces, sad faces, all the different types of faces as we talk and discuss movies that we're forced to watch.
Speaker B:Aside from that, the best place to get involved is on Patreon at what's our Vertedreviews.
Speaker B:We've been trying a couple new things on Patreon, including keeping score votes.
Speaker B:Just straight up suggestions for this month, especially to, you know, provide movies for us to watch.
Speaker B:It is entirely free to vote or get involved in that side of the content creation.
Speaker B:Behind a little bit of a paywall, we do have access to over 700 extra bonus content episodes.
Speaker B:Everything from bloopers and outtakes all the way up to full length episodes of movies nobody should watch.
Speaker B:That we did for you.
Speaker B:But that's the best place to actually get involved in content creation.
Speaker B:And once again, it's 100% free to get involved in the voting process.
Speaker B:Special thanks to our current patrons, Rich and CB Charles for supporting the podcast and being there for us and for Charles especially for selecting our movies for the month of October.
Speaker B:Appreciate you and appreciate that you didn't take a well deserved punch at my soul.
Speaker B:With that, I'll kick it back to the King of Crash, the Colossus of Clout.
Speaker B:A jj yes sir.
Speaker A:Appreciate you.
Speaker A:I'm excited to to to for next week.
Speaker A:I I can't hear wait to hear what you think about next week.
Speaker A:The rest of the month should be funny at least for me.
Speaker A:But yeah, I'm excited for next week.
Speaker A:So there it is.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Good times.
Speaker A:Thanks Charles.
Speaker A:This was something.
Speaker A:Yeah, it's October.
Speaker A:Rest of the month will be fun.
Speaker A:And with that, as always, we appreciate you tuning in.
Speaker A:We'll catch you on the next one baby cinematic app.
